Institute for Virtual Product Engineering

September 2013: Institute VPE in Facebook

The Institute for Virtual Product Engineering of the University of Kaiserslautern is now in Facebook! We wish you a lot of fun on our new page and hope for inspiring discussions. Visit and like our page on facebook, we will be glad if you join us!

Since 2004 the Institute for Virtual Product Engineering (VPE) at the University of Kaiserslautern is led by Professor Martin Eigner. The institute researches the field of virtual product engineering and have extensive experiences in the development of methods and concepts for optimization of all phases of the product engineering process, increasingly under consideration of human factors.  Under the core competences of the institute VPE is the development of product and process models, which are used as a basis of a product oriented implementation of the product lifecycle management (PLM). The optimization of processes with consideration of existing IT solutions for supporting the cooperation between engineers, as well as their integration in the IT landscape of the enterprise, are integral parts of the research and the industrial projects. The research within all of the fields of expertise of the institute is characterized by its high application orientation. A close dialog between science and praxis is always realized.
The Institute for Virtual Product Engineering’s teachings include lectures, theoretical and practical seminars. Since years the institute follows a clear philosophy,  which is characterized by the aim to deliver more than just knowledge to the students. The institute is convinced that the only way for a high-wage country to a leading role in the global arena is ”broad, high-quality education” of young people. Alongside with others, the institute aims at educational goals, which cover skills that the future engineer will need: professional and methodology competence, social-communicational skills and  decision-making ability.
