System Lifecycle Management

Similar to Product Lifecycle Management, System Lifecycle Management (SysLM) is an integrated and information-driven concept on administrative level which helps to handle the complexity of information of product systems more efficiently over the entire lifecycle. Therefore, System Lifecycle Management describes a concept and not a monolithic IT system. It gains effectiveness by usage of SysLM Backbones and thereby supports engineering by mastering the complexity within the whole product lifecycle - from the beginning with its first definition of product requirements till End-of-Life activities. In following figure, a two-layer-model according to Paredis and Eigner is used for proposing a definition of the new term System Lifecycle Management.
 

System Lifecycle Management

System Lifecycle Management (SysLM) is a concept for universal information management which extends Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) by explicitly regarding the early product development stage and integrating all classical engineering disciplines and moreover considering services. The concept is based on direct and also indirect integration (by TDM) of different authoring systems along the entire lifecycle of product systems. System Lifecycle Management solutions are technical-administrative backbones, responsible for the product models - respectively system models - and processes. All stages of development and all models created during the development (while going through the V-Model) are included and linked together to allow precise traceability.
