Abstract

The formation of value networks in which collaboration is pursued for the development of innovative smart products represents an established approach to face the challenges arising from shortening product life cycles, increasing customer requirements and expanding product complexity. This requires a redesign of existing methods and approaches, since established models and methods do not seem appropriate anymore in the context of smart products. This master's thesis was therefore designed to begin with a comprehensive literature review of collaboration in value networks. Based on this, existing collaboration approaches should be compared and evaluated in order to derive requirements for future collaborations and to develop an initial framework for future value network collaborations. In order to answer the research questions, the current standard of the topics smart products, value networks, collaboration and innovation was elaborated. Furthermore, industry examples of already existing collaborations were identified, compared and evaluated. The knowledge gained was then used to derive requirements for future collaboration approaches. Based on these, an initial framework for value network collaboration for the development of innovative smart products was developed. The framework addresses the identified lack of methodologies and procedures that have a holistic focus and decisively include all phases of collaboration throughout the product life cycle.
